The Connection
Grew up, for the most part, around trains. Something unspoken there, from unseen steam whistles late at night, through the tone of the diesel horns, an attraction that many share, always present. Dad born and raised in Port Byron, NY, on the corner of what is now the intersection of Rte 31 and 38.
The house belonged to Henry Wells, who would later join Fargo and form the Wells – Fargo Company, Mr. Fargo from Weedsport, thus one of the indirect connections to this project. My grandfather worked for the NYC Railroad for many years doing track and signal maintenance, and several great stories were told countless times.
I was raised in Solvay, NY, and the railroads were all around – by this time diesel power had replaced steam – and I marveled at their intimidating strength. How I became a Valley fan, I’ll never know! By the time we moved to Hamburg, NY, I was pretty much hooked on HO, and again accessed the nearby rails both in Hamburg and in Buffalo.
Another move, college, work, married, children, back to college, more work. By the late 80’s had managed to secure a portion of the basement for a layout, the first Auburn to Weedsport run. It was a major neighborhood attraction for kids of all sizes and ages; however, it was not to be long -lived. By ’93, everything had been either sold or put into storage – it was teen time.
Twenty plus years later, here we are with some time, a little space, and a lot of catching up to do!
Hope you enjoy my site.
Happy Railroading!
